Chapter 28

My living room carpet appeared under my feet. I curled my toes in its familiar softness. That was one nice thing about travelling with Anthony when he took his time. You could be somewhere in the blink of an eye. It wasn’t any more painful than a walk in the park. It was when he did things in the blink of an eye that things got violent.

I stepped out of Anthony’s arms. After a second, he let go. The long skirts of my borrowed dress tugged at the carpet. It made walking more effort than it should have been. I couldn’t wait to get back in my jeans. I could wait until I wasn’t around Anthony anymore though. I’d been naked enough in front of him.

I turned around to look at him. What did you say to someone who saved your life but had used something you despised to do it?

Turns out I didn’t have to say anything.

“Cy,” his jaw ticked as he searched for words. “What are you doing?”

Back on the vampire thing again. And just like that I remembered why I didn’t like being at Knockaine: you couldn’t escape the judgement. Someone else was always trying to run your life.

Anthony kept on as if it wasn’t a waste of his breath.

“You know better than to get involved with a vampire.” He said.

Did I know better than to get involved with a vampire? Yes. But what did you do when a vampire and your heart were the one in the same? Weren’t you supposed to follow your heart? Poets, philosophers, and even scientists now are saying to follow your heart. So how did you follow your heart when it involved something forbidden? Ok, if it hurts you, I get that. Have some sense.

But Sven’s love had brought me nothing but happiness. Sven seemed to think we had a chance at love. If he thought that, I’d be damned if I wasn’t going to try.

A thunderous pounding shook the front door. It shook with a force so brutal, I was surprised it was still on its hinges. There was a lot of anger in that knock. Even though I didn’t want to see who was on the other side of the door, I sent a little thank you to Danu that it got me out of answering Anthony at least.

Anthony knew I felt that way too.

His face screwed up, unhappy with the interruption. “You aren’t going to get lucky forever, Cy.”

I’d accidentally exposed our race to vampires and the Croí had all but said I was destined, against my will, for the Crown. The memory made me rub the golden crown tattoo on my wrist. I wasn’t sure how that qualified as “lucky.” It wasn’t worth the effort to debate it though, so I settled for moving to the tiled foyer. I waited for the blue glitter to fly past me before opening the door.

To my utter shock, there stood Sven. Fury radiated from him. He pushed past me, grabbing my wrist as he passed.
